This piece is from the Urubu Mine in Monte Belo, Itinga, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This elbaite tourmaline is commonly called “celery” tourmaline because of its color and striations. Parts of this crystal have been replaced with feldspar and quartz. The core is made up of stacked chambers of tourmaline with what appears to be fibrous amphibole between the layers. The altered core terminates on one end with a skeletal quartz crystal. This piece measures 1 13/16 x 7/8 x 11/16 inches or 46 x 22 x 17 mm.

This tourmaline, variety elbaite, is from the Urubu Mine in Monte Belo, Itinga, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This mine contains over twenty different mineral species and tourmaline is one of them. This elbaite tourmaline is commonly called “celery” tourmaline because of its color and striations. Parts of this crystal have been replaced with feldspar and quartz. The core is made up of stacked chambers of tourmaline with what appears to be fibrous amphibole between the layers. The altered core terminates on one end with a skeletal quartz crystal.
