This tourmaline, variety elbaite, crystal is from the Pedeneira Claim in Sao Jose da Safira, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Elbaite is in the tourmaline Group of Minerals. It is a silicate that contains the elelments Al, B, H, Li, Na, O and Si. It can be found in a variety of colors which is caused by traces of other elements in the crystal lattice. This crystal is from a 2004 find. It Is transparent a predominately blue green color with zones of green and lavender. It has an pinacoid termination with striated prism faces that have a glass luster. There is a small secondary crystal on one face. This piece measures 1 11/16 x 3/8 x 1/4 inches or 45 x 9 x 6 mm. It weighs 4.3 grams.
