These elbaite crystals are from the Nuristan Province of Afghanistan. This is a mountainous region in the eastern part of Afghanistain that contains many mines and diggings in gem and mineral crystal pegmatites. It has 52 different mineral species including elbaite. Elbaite is a type of tourmaline that contains the elements Na, Li, Al, Si, B, and H. Pure crystals are colorless but it can be found in a variety of colors depending on the trace elements incorporated in the crystal lattice.This specimen is the pink variety called rubellite. It consists of a primary crystal that hosts several secondary and parallel crystals. They are translucent to transparent and have a glass luster. It is good on all sides and the termination is intact with small muscovite crystals. This piece measures 2 1/16 x 3/4 x 9/16 inches or 52 x 19 x 14 mm. It weighs 15 grams.
