This tourmaline, variety elbaite, is from the Pederneira Mine in Sao Jose da Safira, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Elbaite is in the tourmaline Group of Minerals. It is a silicate that contains the elements Al, B, H, Li, Na, O and Si. It can be found in a variety of colors which is caused by traces of other elements in the crystal lattice. These crystals are from a 2004 find. They are translucent to transparent with striated prism faces and a glass luster. The primary pair of crossed crystals as well as the several secondary crystals in an attached cluster are all double terminated. The colors range from; blue, blue/green, green and red. This piece measures 1 3/8 x 7/8 x 9/16 inches or 35 x 22 x 14 mm it weighs 10.2 grams
