This tourmaline, variety elbaite, crystal is from the Pedeneira Claim in Sao Jose da Safira, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Elbaite is in the tourmaline Group of Minerals. It is a silicate that contains the elelments Al, B, H, Li, Na, O and Si. It can be found in a variety of colors which is caused by traces of other elements in the crystal lattice. This crystal is from a 2004 find. It is a transparent indicolite or blue tourmaline. It has an flat termination with striated prism faces that have a glass luster. One prism edge has irregular altered or healed growth (photos 3 and 5). This piece measures 1 5/8 x 3/8 x 5/16 inches or 41 x 9 x 8 mm. It weighs 7.5 grams.
