This tourmaline, variety elbaite, crystal is from the Pederneira Mine in Sao Jose da Safira, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Elbaite is in the tourmaline Group of Minerals. It is a silicate that contains the elements Al, B, H, Li, Na, O and Si. It can be found in a variety of colors which is caused by traces of other elements in the crystal lattice. This crystal is from a 2004 find. It is a transparent indicolite or blue tourmaline. It has an flat termination with striated prism faces that have a glass luster. One prism edge has irregular altered or healed growth (photos 3 and 5). This crystal is a small miniature that measures 1 x 7/16 x 3/8 inches or 25 x 11 x 9 mm. It weighs 5.2 grams.
