Description
This tourmaline, variety elbaite, is from the Darri-i-Pech Pegmatite Field in the Chapa Dara District, Kunar, Afghanistan. The Pech Valley contains many mines and prospects that contain several varieties of gemstone and tourmaline crystals including elbaite. It is a silicate that contains the elements Al, B, H, Li, Na, O and Si. It can be found in a variety of colors which are caused by traces of other elements in the crystal lattice. This large crystal is deep red with a glass luster. It is translucent under bright light and it has a pyramidal termination. There are several parallel secondary crystals of varying length attached. The rear has mica matrix attached. This piece measures 3 x 1 1/8 x 3/4 inches or 76 x 28 x 19 mm.
