Tourmalinated Quartz Crystal from the Skardu District

This tourmalinated quartz crystal is from the Skardu District in Baltistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. This area contains hundreds of mines and digs in which over 85 different mineral species including tourmaline and quartz can be found. This is an elongated quartz crystal that contains inclusions of needle-like schorl tourmaline crystals. Schorl is an iron rich variety of tourmaline that contains the elements Na, Fe, Al, Si, O, B, and H. The quartz is transparent and the black schorl crystals make the quartz appear black. This piece measures 3 1/8 x 1 x 7/8 inches or 80 x 25 x 22 mm.,
