This topaz crystal is from the Thomas Range in Juab County, Utah, USA.There are over fifteen, known, mines and diggings in the area and they contain 44 different mineral species including topaz. It is a silicate and it contains the elements Al, Si, O, F, and H. It can be found in a variety of colors which are created by different trace impurities in the crystal lattice. The topaz crystals from this locale tend to be small and they are rarely over 1 inch in size. This specimen consists of a champagne colored crystal topaz crystal that is approximately 50% covered in a rhyolite matrix which is typical for the location. This piece is a large thumbnail that measures 1 x 1/2 x 1/2 inches or 25 x 12 x 12 mm.
