Description
This gem spodumene crystal is from the Laghman Province of Afghanistan. This province encompasses a large area containing hundreds of pegmatites and dozens of mines and diggings that are mined for a variety of minerals including spodumene. It is a lithium silicate that contains the elements Li, Si, Al and O. Spodumene is commonly recrystallizied or altered by chemical or temperature changes in the hydrothermal fluids in which formed.This is a double terminated with will defined prism faces. The crystal is transparent with internal flawing. The front and rear prism faces are striated and the sides are smooth. All of the prism faces have a glass luster and the terminations have a vitreous to glass luster. This crystal measures 2 3/4 x 1 15/16 x 1 1/16 inches or 70 x 49 x 27 mm. It weighs 6.2 ounces or 890 carats.
