Sphalerite Crystal Plate from the Elmwood Mine, Tennessee

These sphalerite crystals are from the Elmwood Mine in Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, Ba-F-Pb-Zn District, US. This mine contains three shafts called the Elmwood, Cumberland, and Gordonsville. It has an entry slope called the Stonewall. They contain eleven different minerals including sphalerite which is the main ore mineral. This is a thin chert matrix that is covered with stunning sphalerite crystals that have tetragonal habits and a metallic luster. There are some small calcites associated with the piece. This piece measures 2 1/4 x 1 3/4 x 1 inches or 57 x 45 x 25 mm.
