This spessartine is from the Wushan Spessartine Mine in Tongbei, Yunxiao Co. Zhangghou Prefecture, Fujian Province, China. This locale contains seventeen different mineral species including spessartine (garnet). It is a silicate and contains the elements Mn, Al, Si, and O. This specimen consists of a feldspar crystal and smokey quartz crystal matrix (sawed on the bottom) that hosts dozens of transparent glassy spessartine garnet crystals. The garnets have a trapezohedral morphology with sharp edges and well defined growth patterns on the faces. The larger garnets are approximately 4 mm across.
