This calcite with specularite hematite is from the St Joe Mine in Balmat, Balmat-Edwards Zinc District, Lawrence County, New York, USA. There are a dozen mines in the district that have a total of 82 different minerals including calcite and hematite. Calcite is a carbonate that contains the elements Ca, C and O. Hematite is an oxide that contains Fe and O. This specimen consists of a translucent scalenohedral calcite crystal point that contains pepper-like inclusions of red and blue-black hematite crystals. It has a vitreous luster. It measures 1 x 1 x 5/8 inches or 25 x 25 x 16 mm.
