Description
This native silver with acanthite is from Batopilas, Andres del Rio District, Batopilas Municipality, Chihuahua, Mexico. There are dozens of former and active mines in the district. They produce up to 41 different minerals including native silver. This piece consists of a remnant calcite matrix that hosts acanthite and native silver. The silver is in a crystalline plate boxwork with a primary spinel twinned crystal protruding from the top. The acanthite appears as a thin coating on the silver and as pseudo-cubic crystals in/on the calcite matrix. This piece is a small cabinet that measures 2 1/8 x 1 5/16 x 11/16 inches or 53 x 33 x 20 mm.
