Description

This sapphire crystal is from the Zazafotsy Quarry, Zazafotsy Commune, Ihosy District, Horombe Region, Fianarantsoa Province, Madagascar. Six different mineral species have been identified from this locale including five gemstone varieties. Sapphire is in the corundum family of minerals and it is an oxide mineral (Al,O). This crystal has a hexagonal morphology and is double terminated. It is intact and has complete surfaces on all sides. One termination has well defined triangular growth patterns. This is an excellent specimen with an olive green color and  a vitreous luster. It measures 1 7/16 x 7/8 x 11/16 inches or 37 x 22 x 21 mm and weighs 170 carats.
