This sapphire crystal is from the Soapstone Hill location in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, USA. Corundum is an oxide that contains the elements Al and O. In pure form corundum is colorless but trace impurities in the crystal lattice can color it with a variety of colors. The gem and colorful varieties are called sapphires and rubies. This is double terminated crystal with a hexagonal habit and a barrel shape. It is a large and well defined crystal for the locale. It has a mottled pink blue and grey color.. It weighs 175 carats. It measures 1 7/16 x 15/16 x 13/16 inches or 37 x 24 x 20 mm.
