Description

This sapphire crystal is from the Goodensville Mine in the Cowee Valley, Ellijay District, Franklin, Macon County, North Carolina, USA. This area was once a prodigious producer of corundum for use in commercial applications by the extraction of corundum from both alluvial and hardrock mining. After commercial  mining for corundum ceased many of the mines and properties were opened to the public for collecting of ruby and sapphires by rock hounds and collectors. Although most of the sites are no longer open several are still operating for a thriving tourist industry. This is a multi colored lavender and bronze sapphire. This piece measures 21 x 18 x 16 mm. It weighs 60 carats.
