These ruby crystals are from the Mysore District, Karnataka, India. This locale is famous for the varying sizes and associations of ruby found there. Ruby is the red variety of the aluminum oxide corundum. It contains the elements Al and O. This piece consists of a calcite rich matrix that hosts several ruby crystals that are scattered on all sides of the piece. The ruby’s have a rich red color and are translucent under bright light. They have well defined hexagonal shapes and a vitreous luster. It measures 1 3/4 x 1 3/8 x 1 1/16 inches or 45 x 35 x 26 mm. The largest crystal is exposed from the matrix to about 10 mm.
