This ruby crystal is from the Jagdalek Ruby Deposit, Surobi District, Kabul, Afghanistan. This deposit contains hundreds of different mines and pits that are operated for the recovery of ruby and sapphire. Ruby is the red gem variety of the mineral corundum. It is an oxide that contains the elements Al, and O. This piece consists of a snow white marble matrix that hosts a single complex cluster of ruby crystals that are exposed on all sides. The matrix measures 2 1/2 x 1 5/8 x 1 3/8 inches or 64 x 41 x 35 mm. The cluster of ruby is approximately 20 mm in it’s longest dimension.
