Rubellite Tourmaline “Mushroom from Mogok, Mandalay Region

This elbaite tourmaline, variety rubellite, is from Mogok in the pyin-Oo-Lwin District, Madalay Region, Myanmar. This area is famous for the gem bearing alluvial deposits mined there and it also contains several pegmatite mines that produce topaz and tourmaline. This particular formation of rubellite is commonly called a “mushroom” due to the way the terminations flare out like caps on mushrooms. It is just over thumbnail size and measures 26 x 21 x 19 mm.
