Description
This rhodochrosite is from the Uchucchacua Mine in the Oyon Province, Lima Department, Peru. The mineral veins found there are mined primarily for silver but they also contain 52 other minerals including rhodochrosite. It is a gangue mineral and a carbonate that contains the elements Mn, C and O. This specimen contains dozens of translucent to transparent red crystals on galena and quartz matrix. The crystals have scalenohedral habits and a bright glassy luster. . The piece measures 2 1/2 x 1 3/4 x 1 3/16 inches or 64 x 45 x 31 mm.
