Description
This quartz is from the Diamond Hill Mine in Antrville, Abbeville County, South Carolina, USA. This mine contains three varieties of quartz that are found in a variety of crystal habits. Iron oxides and sulfide pseudomorphs are common. The oxides are included and coat some of the quartz crystals with a colorful patina such as the one on this piece. This specimen is a geode type crystal formation whose core is filled with glassy quartz crystals. Some of the crystals have a golden iridescence caused by a thin layer of oxides. There are also some micro epimorphs scattered about the piece. It measures 2 7/8 x 2 1/8 x 1 1/2 inches or 73 x 53 x 38 mm.
