Description
This pyrophyllite is from the Graves Moutain Mine in Lincoln County, Georgia, USA. This was an open pit operation that was mined for the recovery of kyanite. Several accessory minerals including rutile, lazulite and pyrophyllite are found there. Pyrophyllite is a silicate that contains the elements Al, Si, O and H. This specimen consists of interpenetrating, accicular, clusters of pyrophyllite crystals with minor hematite. The pyrophyllite crystals have a micaceous luster and the hematite gives some of them a copper color with a reddish contrast. This piece measures 5 1/2 x 4 x 2 inches or 140 x 100 x 50 mm.
