Description
These pyrite crystals are from Navajun, La Rioja, Spain. The deposits in this area are cretaceous and are 65 to 145 million years old. This locale is famous for the outstanding crystals found there. They have sharp cubic habits, a bright golden color and a mirror luster. Pyrite is a sulfide mineral containing the elements Fe and S. It can have a variety of crystal habits including cubic. This specimen is a group or chain-like cluster consisting of 4 crystals that are attached and free of matrix. I acquired this piece in 1986 and up until recently did I realize that it was reconstructed or put back together and glued in its original posture. This piece measures 3 1/4 x 2 3/16 x 1 7/8 inches or 82 x 56 x 47 mm.
