Description
This pyrite (pyritized) fossil is from Charmouth Beach, Charmouth, West Dorset, Dorset, England, United Kingdom. This is Englands favorite fossil collecting area. Animal fossils from the Jurassic Period, 196 million years old, wash out of the cliffs and can be found mixed in the gravels of the beach. Several species of minerals contributed to the fossilization of the animals including pyrite. This is the pyritized fossil of the now extinct ammonite species Eoderoceras armatum and it is a double sided specimen. It was cleaned, stabilized and coated in a protective lacquer. The pyrite has a gold to bronze patina. This piece measures 1 5/8 x 1 1/2 x 9/16 inches or 42 x 38 x 14 mm.
