Phenakite – Large Floater Crystal from the Shigar Valley

This phenakite crystal is from the Shigar Valley, Shigar District, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Shigar is an immense district that contains hundreds of known pegmatites and dozens of active mines that are producing a variety of gemstone crystals including phenakite. Phenakite is a beryllium rich silicate that contains the elements Be, Si and O. Crystals are usually small and many times they have modified and altered morphologies like this crystal. It is a floater with terminated recrystallized surfaces on all sides and it is free of matrix. It is transparent with a frosty glass like luster. There are minor white clay deposits in the deeper creases of the crystal. It is a relatively large crystal for the species. It measures 2 x 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 inches or 50 x 32 x 32 mm. It weighs 237 carats
