These orpiment crystals are from the Quiruvilca Mine in the Quiruvilca District, Santiago de Chuco Province, La Libertad Department, Peru. This mine is operated for the recovery of a variety of metals. It contains 37 different minerals including orpiment. It is a sulfide that contains the elements As and S. This specimen consists of a sphalerite matrix that is topped with large euhedral orpiment crystals. They have a rich orange to yellow color and a resinous luster.. This piece measures 1 13/16 x 1 1/2 x 13/16 inches or 41 x 38 x 20 mm
