Description
This manganoan calcite is from the Pachipaqui District, Bolognesi Province, Ancash Department of Peru. This district encompasses a large area containing several mines. There are 30 different minerals found in the district including manganoan calcite. Calcite normally contains the elements Ca and C but this piece is rich in the element Mn or manganese which gives it a light pink hue.This specimen consists of a remnant galena matrix that is covered with a thick layer of interpenetrating rhombic manganoan calcite crystals. It measures 3 1/2 x 2 5/8 x 2 inches or 88 x 67 x 50 mm
