Description
This ilvaite crystal is from the Huanggang Fe-Sn deposit in the Hexigten Banner, Ulanhad league, Inner Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture, China. This is is large deposit containing at least seven mines containing 60 different minerals including ilvaite. It is a silicate and it contains the elements Ca, Fe, Si, O and H. Several years ago these ilvaite crystals were found at the mine and they became a big sensation. They are huge for the species and they are possibly the largest that will ever be found. This crystal is made up of dozens of parallel twins and it contains several terminations. The luster is vitreous on the sides and the termination has more of a matte luster. It measures 2 1/4 x 1 1/8 x 1 inches or 57 x 28 x 25 mm.
