Hessonite Garnets from the Jeffrey Mine

These hessonite garnets are from the Jeffrey Mine (John Mansfield Mine), Asbestos, Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Quebec, Canada. This was an chrysotile asbestos mine until asbestos was identified as a health hazard. It is now inactive. One hundred and ten other minerals have been identified at the mine including hessonite which is a variety of grossular garnet. It can be found in a variety of colors depending on trace elements in the crystal lattice. This piece consists of a crystalline garnet  matrix that is topped with a layer of gem hessonite crystals.They have a pinkish hue are transparent and have a glass luster. This piece measures approximately 2 1/8 x 1 1/8 x 7/8 inches or 52 x 28 x 22 mm.
