Description
These hessonte garnets are from the Jeffrey Mine (John Mansfield Mine), Asbestos, Les Sources RCM, Estrie, Quebec, Canada. This was an chrysotile asbestos mine until asbestos was identified as a health hazard. It is now inactive. One hundred and ten other minerals have been identified at the mine including hessonite which is a variety of grossular garnet. It can be found in a variety of colors depending on trace elements in the crystal lattice. This piece consists of a crystalline garnet matrix that hosts an exposed vug containing gem-like garnets. They have a pink color, are transparent and have a glass luster. This piece measures approximately 2 x 1 7/8 x 7/8 inches or 51 x 47 x 22 mm.
