Hedenbergite in Quartz from the Kavalerovo Mining District

This hedenbergite is from the Sinerechenskoe skarn occurance in the Kavalerov Mining District in Primorskiy Kray, Far Eastern Region, Russia. This is a large district that contains dozens of mines and hundreds of different minerals including hedenbergite, quartz and andradite. All three minerals are silicates. This specimen consists of a matrix of andradite garnet crystals that is topped with dark green quartz crystals. The quartz has complex scepter-like growth and a dark green (almost Black) color created by heavy inclusions of hedenbergite. This piece measures 6 x 3 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches or 152 x 82 x 82 mm.
