Description

This gormanite is from Big Fish River in the Dawson Mining District, Yukon Canada. This district contains several locales that contain over a dozen mines and diggings. The deposits contain a variety of phosphate minerals including the rare phosphate gormanite. It contains the elements Fe, Al, P, O, and H. This specimen consists of a thin iron-shale matrix that contains an exposed vein of gormanite crystals. The crystals are green-blue in color and have a velvet chatoyance. They are fibrous and form fan-like sheaths or clusters of crystals. This piece measures 2 1/2 x 1 1/8 x 3/4 inches or 64 x 28 x 19 mm.
