Description
This galena sphalerite and calcite mix is from the Elmwood Mine in Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, Ba-F-Pb-Zn District, Tennessee, US. This mine contains three shafts called the Elmwood, Cumberland, and Gordonsville. It has an entry slope called the Stonewall. They contain eleven different minerals including galena, sphalerite which is the main ore mineral and calcite. Galena and sphalerite are sulfides which contain the elements ( Pb, S ) and Zn, S respectively. Calcite is a carbonate containing the elements Ca and C. This piece consists of a ruby-jack sphalerite crystal matrix that hosts several galena crystals and a single calcite crystal. This piece measures 2 1/2 x 2 1/4 x 1 1/2 inches or 64 x 57 x 38 mm.
