Description
This galena is from the Picher Field, Tri-State District, Ottawa County, Oklahoma, USA. This area covers approximately 72 square miles and contains dozens of mines. Thirty six different minerals can be found there including galena. It is a sulfide that contains the elements Pb and S. This specimen consists of several interpenetrating, cubic, galena crystals with minor chert matrix on the base ( or rear ). The crystals are steel-grey with a sub-metallic luster. They have complex, stair-step, prism faces with multiple twinning planes. This piece measures 2 1/4 x 1 3/4 x 1 1/2 inches or 57 x 45 x 38 mm.
