Description

This galena is from the Madan Ore Field in the Rhodope Mountains, Smolyan Oblast, Bulgaria. This area contains several ore bodies that have been mined for hundreds of years. Dozens of mines were worked for the recovery of lead and zinc. It contains 75 different mineral species including galena. It is a sulfide that contains the elements Pb and S. This specimen consists of a quartz matrix that is covered in galena crystals with associated quartz crystal formations.The morphologies of the galena vary from modified cubes, twinned, and cuboctahedral. The crystals have a silver color and a bright mirror luster. There are some druse calcites present also. It measures 3 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 1 1/8 inches or 90 x 38 x 28 mm.
