Description
This galena is from the Picher Field, Tri-State District, Ottawa County, Oklahoma, USA. This area covers approximately 72 square miles and contains dozens of mines. Thirty six different minerals can be found there including galena. It is a sulfide that contains the elements Pb and S. This specimen consists of a pair of interpenetrating twinned galena crystals on a breccia chert matrix. The crystals are steel-grey with a sub-metallic to metallic luster. The prism surfaces have multiple twinned planes and complex growth. This piece measures 2 3/8 x 1 13/16 x 1 9/16 inches or 60 x 44 x 39 mm.
