Description
This fluorite is from the Yiwu area in Jinhua, Zhejiang, China. This area contains several fluorite deposits that are mined by at least five different operations. Fluorite is a halide that contains the elements Ca and F. It comes in a variety of colors which are determined by the amount and kind of trace impurities present in the crystal lattice. This piece consists of a chert matrix that is covered on the display side with druse quartz and translucent blue fluorite crystals. The crystals are cubic with well defined sharp edges and corners. A few of the crystals (as shown in close-ups) have irregular healed surfaces which appear to be re-crystallized former contacts. The matrix has been trimmed and sawed as shown in photo 8. This piece measures 6 1/4 x 3 5/8 x 1 3/4 inches or 159 x 92 x 45 mm
