This fibrous malachite is from the Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Katanga Copper Cresent encompasses a vast mineral rich area containing 209 different minerals. Local people work the mines for mineral specimens like this malachite. It is a carbonate containing the elements Cu, C, O and H. It is a secondary mineral found in oxidized and weathered zones of copper ore deposits. This piece consists of elongated fibrous crystals of malachite. All sides have crystals and each angle and view shows different aspects of the growth and structure of the crystal formations. This piece measures 3 3/8 x 2 5/8 x 2 1/4 inches or 86 x 67 x 57 mm.
