Epidote – Large Blade-Like Crystal from the Ruvuma Region

This epidote crystal is from Songea in the Songea District, Ruvuma Region, Tanzania. This locale is mined by the local population for ruby and sapphire however approximately one dozen other minerals including epidote can be found there. Epidote is a silicate that contains the elements Ca, Fe, Al, Si , O and H. This specimen consists of a blade-like tabular crystal with a dark brown color, lightly striated surfaces and a viteous luster. The piece measures  1 3/4 x 1 x 1/4 inches or 45 x 25 x 6 mm.
