This emerald is from the Dayakou Emerald Mine in Malipo County, Wenshan, Yunnan, China. Pegmatite viens in the metamorphic host rock at this locale contain over a dozen different minerals including the green variety of beryl called emerald. This specimen consists of a mica schist matrix that hosts an elongated emerald crystal measuring 57 mm from tip to tip. The crystals’ exposure has been accentuated by the careful removal of the adjacent matrix. This piece measures approximately 3 3/8 x 2 3/8 x 1 3/8 inches or 86 x 60 x 35 mm.
