Description

This elbaite tourmaline is from  Cruzeiro in Sao Jose da Safira, Safira pegmatite district, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This district contains multiple pegmatites with several mines and diggings that are operated for recovery of  gemstones and collector specimens. Over three dozen different minerals can be found in the mines including elbaite. It is a silicate and it contains the elements Na, Li, Al, Si, O B and H. This specimen consists of a remnant cleavelandite crystal matrix that is covered with large primary growth crystals with subsequent deposits of smaller secondary crystals. The large crystals are complete and intact with irregular terminations that are possibly due to former tourmaline and matrix contact points or recrystallized growth. The smaller crystals are randomly oriented on the piece. They are mostly translucent to transparent and have a glass luster. There are crystals on all surfaces of the piece and the longest is 3 inches long. The specimen can be aesthetically displayed from several positions. This piece measures  5 x 3 1/2 x 2 1/4 or 125 x 88 x 57 mm.
