Description
This dravite tourmaline is from the Kokcha Valley in Badakshan, Afghanistan. It is in the uvite-dravite series of tourmaline and different sources list as being in both. It is a silicate and it contains the elements Na, Mg, Al, Si, O, B, and H. This specimen consists of a fuchsite matrix that hosts a somewhat rare blue tourmaline The crystal has a trigonal-pyramidal morphology. It has a slight translucence near the surface under bright light. This piece is a small cabinet sized piece that measures 2 1/4 x 1 3/4 x 1 5/8 inches or 57 x 45 x 41 mm. The larger (photo 1-3) crystal is approximately 10 mm in it’s longest dimension.
