Description
This crocoite is from the famous Red Lead Mine in the Dundas mineral field, Zeehan District, West Coast municipality, Tasmania, Australia. This operation was a silver-lead mine that produced world class crocoite specimens during mining. Crocoite is a chromate that contains the elements Pb, Cr, and O. Specimens from this locale are highly sort after. This specimen consists of a gossan-oxide matrix that contains exposed veins and vugs filled with crocoite crystals. The crystals have an orange-red color and a glistening vitreous luster. This piece measures approximately 5 1/2 x 4 x 1 3/4 inches or 140 x 105 x 45 mm
