Description

This gersdorffiite has a  hand written label that states that it is from Shaban, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). This would put the locale in the Zvishavane District, Midlands Zimbabwe. However, the combination of cobaltite and gersdorffite are known to be found only in the Chiredzi Mining District, Masvingo, Zimbabwe. The surfaces of this piece are mostly covered in silver gersdorffitite crystals with several small vugs filled with blebs and crusts of cobaltite. Gersdorffite is a nickel sulfide that contains the elements Ni, As and S. The crystals are bright silver with cubic and octahedral habits. The vugs have an iridescent coating. This piece measures 1 7/8 x 1 1/2 x 13/16 inches or 48 x 38 x 21 mm.
