Description

This chalcotrichite is from the Ray Mine at Scott Mountain, Mineral Creek Mining District, Dripping Springs Mountains, Pinal County, Arizona, USA. This mine contained 55 different minerals including many copper minerals like This is an iron and copper mine that contains over 25 types of minerals including chalcotrichite. It is a copper oxide, elements Cu and O, that is a variable form of cuprite. This specimen consists of a quartz matrix that is covered on the display side with a thin layer of limonite and a carpet of fibrous chalcotrichite crystals. The crystals have a magenta to red to purple color and a sub-metallic luster.  They are best viewed under magnification as shown in photo one. This piece measures 3 1/4 x 2 1/4 x 1 3/8 inches or 84 x 57 x 35 mm
