Chalcopyrite from the Yaoganxian Mine, Hunan Province

This chalcopyrite is from the Yaogangxian Mine, Yaogangxian W-Sn Ore Field, Tizhang, Chenzhou Prefecture, Hunan Province of China. Tungsten and tin are the primary minerals extracted from multiple ore bodies in an area spanning 4 x 2.5 km. Seventy-eight different species of minerals are found there including chalcopyrite which is a sulfide containing the elements Fe, Cu and S.. This is an aesthetic piece that consists of a mixed crystal base made up of arsenopyrite, muscovite, sphalerite and chalcopyrite crystals that is topped with a formation of twinned chalcopyrite crystals. It is a small miniature that measures 1 1/4 x 13/16 x 5/8 inches or 32 x 20 x 16 mm.
