These calcites on sphalerites are from the Cumberland Mine in Smith County, Tennessee, USA. This mine is located next to the Elmwood mine which are both mined primarily for zinc ore. It contains 6 different minerals including sphalerite, a sulfide of zinc and gangue minerals like calcite which is a carbonate. This specimen consists of a thin chert matrix that is topped with glistening sphalerite crystals that host scalenahedral calcite crystals. The calcites are translucent to transparent and have a light amber color. This piece measures 1 x 1 x 3/4 inches or 25 x 25 x 19 mm.
