This calcite is from the Elmwood Mine in Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, Ba-F-Pb-Zn District, Tennessee, US. This mine contains three shafts called the Elmwood, Cumberland, and Gordonsville. It has an entry slope called the Stonewall. They contain eleven different minerals including sphalerite which is the main ore mineral. The calcite is a common gangue mineral associated with the sphalerite. This specimen is a large translucent to transparent calcite crystal. The lower surface is cleaved and there is remnant chert and sphalerite matrix near the base.. This piece measures 4 1/2 tip to tip or 3 3/4 x 3 3/16 x 1 1/2 inches or 95 x 81 x 38 mm as displayed in photo 1.
