This barite is from the Elmwood Mine in Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee, USA. This mine contains three shafts called the Elmwood, Cumberland, and Gordonsville. It has an entry slope called the Stonewall. They contain eleven different minerals including gangue species like barite. It is a sulfate mineral that contains the elements Ba, S and O. This specimen consists of a plate-like sphalerite crystal matrix that hosts a barite crystal cluster. The barite is in ball-like cluster that are often called snowballs. This piece measures 3 x 2 x 1 3/4 inches or 76 x 50 x 45 mm.
